“Live” means alive with meaning: an element a reader would miss if it were cut off. Background color is not live. The tail of an italic letter, a flower petal, a face near the edge, a page number in the footer — all live, if losing them would look like a mistake. KDP’s previewer flags geometry, and human reviewers judge importance, which is why this warning can feel subjective: the measurement is exact, the “is it essential?” call is not.
The two legal positions
| Position | Measurement | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Fully inside | Element ends at or inside 0.25″ from the trim line (use 0.375″+ for comfort) | Body text, page numbers, cover title and author name |
| Fully through (bleed) | Element crosses the trim and extends 0.125″ beyond it, on every side it touches | Full-page photos, background art, cover artwork |
| Illegal: stopped in the strip | Element ends between the trim line and 0.25″ inside it, without bleeding | An image ending 0.1″ from the edge; text “almost” at the margin |
For interiors, the inside (gutter) edge follows the margin table instead of the flat 0.25″: the gutter minimum grows from 0.375″ at 24–150 pages to 0.875″ at 701–828 pages, because thick books curve into the binding. Our margin guide carries the full table.
Why it fires when “nothing looks close to the edge”
- One stray pixel or serif. A single italic tail or a petal crossing into the strip is enough for the automated check — zoom in; the offender is often a fraction of a letter.
- Empty frames count. An invisible empty text box left in a margin is still an object in the strip.
- Footer page numbers. Numbers placed by a template’s footer can sit closer to the bottom trim than the body text they serve.
- The misleading fix-it message. The previewer often phrases this as a size/bleed problem (“add 0.125″…”). If your dimensions are already right, the real fix is moving the element, not enlarging the file.
- Cover panels have their own zones. On covers, keep live content out of the strip around every panel edge, out of the spine’s 0.0625″-per-side fold clearances, and out of the 2″ × 1.2″ barcode zone on the back.
Check it yourself
- Draw (mentally or with guides) the line 0.25″ inside the trim on top, bottom and outside edges; use your page-count gutter value on the inside edge.
- At high zoom, walk every flagged page’s edges and find what enters the strip without bleeding through it.
- Decide per element: is it essential? If yes, move it in. If it is background, extend it the full 0.125″ bleed. Never leave it parked in between.
- Re-check after any resize — scaling a page scales every distance on it.

How to fix it, per tool
Word / Pages
Set margins from the table (mirrored for the gutter), then check headers and footers: page-number distance from the edge must keep numbers inside the live area. See our Word and Pages export guides.
InDesign / Canva
Work on the template’s margin guides, not by eye. Either pull the frame fully inside the guide or snap it to the bleed guide — frames ending between guides are exactly what the checker hunts. Canva has no mirrored gutter, so alternate the wide inside margin by hand on facing pages.
The honest limit
Whether an element is “essential” is a reviewer judgment, so a file can pass the automated geometry check and still be questioned — or sail through with art a stricter reviewer might flag. Build in cushion: 0.375″ of clearance instead of exactly 0.25″ removes both the measurement risk and most of the judgment risk, at no cost to the design.
Or send us the files — the check is free
Email your interior and cover PDFs and we'll tell you exactly what's wrong — in plain English, free, within 48 hours. If it does need fixing, the by-hand fix is $19 and we redo it free if KDP rejects it for a formatting issue we were hired to fix. We rebuild files to be compliant with KDP's published spec — that's the promise we can keep.
