Alcohol markers blend like a dream and give that saturated, professional look. The one rule: they bleed through regular printer paper, so always put a scrap sheet behind your page (or print on cardstock — see paper below).
My take: start with the 80-set. You will not outgrow it for a long time, and your wallet will thank you.
✏️ Colored Pencils — for detail and shading
Pencils are the most forgiving tool: no bleed-through, easy layering, and gorgeous shading on detailed mandalas. Look for soft-core pencils — they lay down richer color with less pressure.
My take: if you color detailed mandalas, soft-core pencils are non-negotiable. Layer light colors first, build up slowly.
✨ Gel Pens — for sparkle and finishing touches
Gel pens are for the fun details: glitter accents, white highlights, metallic outlines. They don't replace markers or pencils — they make finished pages pop.
My take: let gel pen ink dry fully before closing a book or stacking pages — smudges are the #1 gel pen heartbreak.
📄 Paper — the unsung hero
The right paper matters more than expensive markers. Regular copy paper (20 lb) buckles and lets markers bleed straight through. Step up to 65 lb cardstock and everything — markers, pencils, gel pens — behaves better.
My take: check your printer handles cardstock first (most do — use the rear feed or "heavy paper" setting). One ream lasts ages.

Not glamorous, but a case that keeps markers horizontal (so both tips stay inked) will make your supplies last noticeably longer.
