A point is not a vague design feeling; it is a measurement. There are exactly 72 points in 1 inch, so 7pt type has a type body of 7 ÷ 72 = 0.097″. That is already small — roughly the size of the fine print on a medicine bottle — and it is the floor, not a target. Text that a buyer is meant to read (a blurb, a subtitle, your author name) should sit comfortably above it.
Where the 7pt rule actually bites
| Cover element | Why it goes under 7pt | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Back-cover blurb & review quotes | Long copy squeezed into the back panel instead of edited | Cut words first; set the blurb at 9–11pt |
| Spine text | Letter height must fit the spine’s safe strip (spine width minus 0.125″) | Enlarge the book, or leave the spine blank — see the spine guide |
| Copyright / publisher lines | Treated as “fine print” and set at 5–6pt out of habit | 7pt minimum applies here too |
| Text baked into cover artwork | Artwork scaled down at export shrinks the type with it | Measure after scaling, at final print size |
The spine case is the trap with real math behind it. KDP only allows spine text at 79 pages or more, and the letters must fit inside the spine width minus 0.0625″ clearance on each side. On a 100-page white-paper book the spine is 100 × 0.002252″ = 0.225″ wide, leaving a safe strip of just 0.100″ — barely one 7pt line. That is why thin books so often fail on spine text size and placement at the same time.
Check it yourself
- Measure at final size. Point size is judged at the printed size, not at 400% zoom on your monitor. In Acrobat, use the measuring / object-inspector tools on the exported PDF, not the design file you later scaled.
- Check the smallest text, not the title. Titles are never the problem. Check blurbs, quotes, the copyright line, and the spine.
- Watch scaled artwork. If a designer delivered art at 200% and it was placed at 50%, every point size in it halved with it.
- Outlined text still counts. Converting type to outlines stops font errors; it does not change how tall the letters are.

How to fix it
Edit before you enlarge
Back covers fail because the copy is too long, not because the panel is too small. Cut the blurb, drop one review quote, and let the remaining text run at a readable 9–11pt. A shorter blurb at 10pt sells better than a complete one at 6pt that also gets the file flagged.
On the spine: bigger book or blank spine
If the safe strip cannot hold 7pt letters, there are exactly two honest options: add pages until it can, or remove spine text entirely. A plain spine always passes. Our spine text guide and the free spine calculator do this math from your page count and paper type.
The honest limit
KDP’s published minimum is stated on its fonts page for book text generally; it does not publish a separate cover-only table, and enforcement in the previewer and human review can vary by reviewer. Treat 7pt as a hard floor everywhere, keep anything a reader must read well above it, and do not argue a 6pt blurb through review — enlarging the text is faster than appealing.
Or send us the files — the check is free
Email your interior and cover PDFs and we'll tell you exactly what's wrong — in plain English, free, within 48 hours. If it does need fixing, the by-hand fix is $19 and we redo it free if KDP rejects it for a formatting issue we were hired to fix. We rebuild files to be compliant with KDP's published spec — that's the promise we can keep.
