How the math works
KDP multiplies: spine = pages × 0.002252″ (white) or × 0.0025″ (cream). IngramSpark divides by the paper's pages-per-inch: spine = pages ÷ 444 (white 50lb) or ÷ 400 (cream 50lb). The two systems agree almost exactly on white paper and drift apart on cream and at high page counts — which is why a cover built for one platform can be rejected by the other.
Full cover size (both platforms, paperback): width = 0.125″ bleed + back cover + spine + front cover + 0.125″ bleed; height = trim height + 0.25″. KDP hardcover covers are larger again (they wrap the boards) — build those from KDP's hardcover template, not this formula.
Spine text: KDP only allows it on books of 79 pages or more, and the lettering must fit the safe strip — spine width minus 0.125″ (0.0625″ clearance each side). Below roughly 0.35″ of spine, text is legal but microscopic; most publishers under ~150 pages run a clean spine. Full story: the spine text error guide. IngramSpark has no 79-page rule, but the same safe-strip geometry applies — keep type inside spine minus 0.125″, and don't expect it to read well under ~0.3″.

Frequently asked questions
My page count changed after editing. Does the cover really need rebuilding?
Yes. Spine width is pure page-count math; a cover built for 200 pages is the wrong width at 196 or 204, and both platforms measure it. Recount from the final interior PDF — including front matter and any closing pages — then rebuild.
Do blank pages count?
Every page in the interior file counts, blank or not — including IngramSpark's mandatory blank final page. Count the file, not the content.
Why does KDP's own template show a slightly different spine?
Templates round to their manufacturing tolerance; the factors above are the published ones our checking engine uses, and they match KDP's template output to within a few thousandths of an inch. If your cover is within 0.01″ of the template, you're fine; if it's off by a page-count change, you're not.
Does trim size change the spine?
No — spine depends only on page count and paper. Trim size changes the cover's width and height around that spine.
Or send us the files — the check is free
Email your interior and cover PDFs and we'll tell you exactly what's wrong — in plain English, free, within 48 hours. If it does need fixing, the by-hand fix is $19 and we redo it free if the platform rejects it for a formatting issue we were hired to fix. We rebuild files to be compliant with the platform's published spec — that's the promise we can keep.
