IngramSpark spine width calculation: pages ÷ PPI

Short answer: IngramSpark spine width = your page count ÷ the PPI of your paper stock — white 50 lb is 444 PPI, cream 50 lb is 400 PPI. A 300-page book gets a 0.676″ spine on white, 0.750″ on cream. Use the page count of the file you're uploading (blank final page included) and the template from your own title setup — not your KDP cover's math.

Every platform computes the spine from the same physics — page count times paper thickness. What changes at IngramSpark is the form of the math and the paper it runs on: Ingram expresses thickness as PPI (pages per inch) for the specific stock you selected, and its cover template — generated from your title's actual setup — is the final authority. Authors who reuse their KDP cover file fail here, because the KDP file was built from a different title setup: often a different page count (Ingram's count includes the mandatory blank final page), sometimes a different stock, and always a different template.

The IngramSpark spine formula

Spine width = page count ÷ PPI. For IngramSpark's standard paperback stocks:

  • White 50 lb: 444 PPI — a 300-page book gets a 300 ÷ 444 = 0.676″ spine.
  • Cream 50 lb: 400 PPI — the same 300 pages get 300 ÷ 400 = 0.750″.

Other stocks carry other PPIs — that is the real difference from KDP. KDP offers you its papers and its factors (white × 0.002252″, cream × 0.0025″); Ingram's catalogue of stocks is wider, and the spine follows whichever stock the title is set up on. Change the stock and the same interior needs a new cover.

PagesSpine — white 50 lb (444)Spine — cream 50 lb (400)Spine text?
480.108″0.120″Minimum for spine text (paperback)
1000.225″0.250″Yes — keep letters inside the type-safety margins
2000.450″0.500″Yes
3000.676″0.750″Yes
4000.901″1.000″Yes
5001.126″1.250″Yes
6001.351″1.500″Yes

IngramSpark allows spine text on paperbacks from 48 pages (KDP holds out for 79) — but width is still physics: Ingram's spine type safety is 0.0625″ on each side for spines 0.35″ and up, 0.03125″ for smaller spines. On a 100-page white book (0.225″ spine), that leaves a text strip of about 0.1″. Legal and legible are different things; our spine text guide walks through the fit test.

The page count Ingram uses — read this twice

Your Ingram page count includes the mandatory blank final page (see final page must be blank). If your KDP interior ends on page 300 and you add the blank page for Ingram, the Ingram book is 301 pages and the spine grows by a hair (301 ÷ 444 = 0.678″). A hair is enough: covers are checked against the title's set-up page count, and a cover built for 300 pages on a 301-page title is the wrong cover. Count the file you're actually uploading, blank page included, then do the math.

Check it yourself

  1. Count the pages in the interior PDF you will upload to IngramSpark — blank final page included.
  2. Confirm the paper stock in your title setup (white or cream changes the PPI).
  3. Divide pages by PPI and compare against your cover: measure the cover PDF's total width in Acrobat (File > Properties). For a 6×9″ book it should be 0.125″ bleed + 6″ back + spine + 6″ front + 0.125″ bleed. A 300-page cream 6×9″: exactly 13.000 × 9.25″.
  4. Better than measuring: download the cover template from your IngramSpark account for this title and lay your art over it. The template is generated from your setup — if your art disagrees with it, the art is wrong.

How to fix it

Rebuild from the template

Generate the cover template inside your IngramSpark account (it uses your title's real trim, page count, and stock), place it on a locked guide layer in your design tool, and rebuild the spread to its lines: bleed, back cover, spine, front cover, in that order. Export at 300 ppi in CMYK — Ingram's cover spec — and measure the exported PDF before uploading.

If only the spine moved

A spine change of a few hundredths of an inch still means a rebuild, not a stretch: scaling the spread distorts the front and back covers too. Widen or narrow the spine panel itself, re-center the spine text inside the type-safety margins, and re-check the barcode zone on the back cover (it must stay inside its 1.75 × 1″ clear area — see barcode placement).

Or send us the files — the check is free

Email your interior and cover PDFs and we'll tell you exactly what's wrong — in plain English, free, within 48 hours. If it does need fixing, the by-hand fix is $19 and we redo it free if IngramSpark rejects it for a formatting issue we were hired to fix. We rebuild files to be compliant with the platform's published spec — that's the promise we can keep.
