IngramSpark barcode placement: the 1.75 × 1″ zone

Short answer: leave a 1.75″ wide × 1″ tall area completely clear at the bottom-right of your back cover. IngramSpark prints your ISBN barcode there — 100% black on a white box — and if you don't supply one, it places one in that zone anyway, over whatever art is in the way. The ISBN must be your own; there is no free Ingram ISBN.

KDP trains authors to think of the barcode as Amazon's problem — its free ISBN prints the barcode for you. IngramSpark is the opposite arrangement: the ISBN is yours, the barcode is printed from your cover file's back panel, and Ingram reserves a specific zone for it. Art, text, or a background texture inside that zone gets printed over — or gets the file flagged before printing.

The zone, exactly

  • Size: 1.75″ wide × 1″ tall, at the bottom-right of the back cover (inside the trim, not in the bleed).
  • The barcode itself is 100% black on a white box. If you supply your own barcode image, it goes in that zone on a clean white background — never reversed out of a dark cover, never tinted.
  • If you don't supply one, Ingram places one for you — in the same zone, on top of whatever is there. “I didn't put a barcode on my cover” does not keep the zone empty; it just means you didn't choose what it covers.
  • The ISBN must be yours. IngramSpark does not offer a free ISBN, and a KDP free ISBN cannot be used — it names Amazon as the imprint of record. No valid, publisher-owned ISBN, no Ingram title.

Price in the barcodeOptionalOptional — a price-free barcode keeps price changes off the cover file

One practical note on price: printing your retail price inside the barcode (the EAN-5 add-on) means every future price change needs a new cover file. Revisions are free at IngramSpark since February 2026 (see the revision-fee change), so the cost is now time and re-proofing rather than a fee — but a price-free barcode keeps pricing a metadata edit instead of a file project. Our ISBN & barcode rules guide covers the shared ground.

Check it yourself

  1. Open the cover PDF and find the back cover's bottom-right corner, inside the trim line (not the bleed).
  2. Measure a 1.75 × 1″ rectangle up and left from that corner. Is anything in it — a blurb line, a logo, an author photo edge, a dark background with no white box?
  3. If you placed your own barcode: is it 100% black, on white, and does the number under it match the ISBN in your title setup, digit for digit?
  4. Check the ISBN itself: it must be an ISBN you own (bought from Bowker/your national agency or bought through IngramSpark), not a KDP free ISBN.

How to fix it

Clear the zone

Move blurbs, logos, and photos up or left until the 1.75 × 1″ corner is empty background. If your back-cover design is dark, that's fine — leave the zone empty and let the placed barcode's white box sit there, or supply your own barcode on its white box in the zone.

Place your own barcode

Generate the barcode from your ISBN (your ISBN agency's tool, IngramSpark's template, or any reputable barcode generator), 100% black on white, sized to the zone, and verify the encoded digits against your ISBN-13 character by character — a transposed digit is a different book, and this error surfaces at retail, not at upload.

The honest limit

If the ISBN on the cover belongs to someone else — a KDP free ISBN, a vanity imprint you don't control — no cover edit fixes it. The ISBN has to be replaced at the title level, which for a published book usually means a new edition. Check the ISBN before you fall in love with a cover.

Or send us the files — the check is free

Email your interior and cover PDFs and we'll tell you exactly what's wrong — in plain English, free, within 48 hours. If it does need fixing, the by-hand fix is $19 and we redo it free if IngramSpark rejects it for a formatting issue we were hired to fix. We rebuild files to be compliant with the platform's published spec — that's the promise we can keep.
